BASF, the global supplier of chemical products, has enhanced the competency of its coating center at its global headquarters, Ludwigshafen by installing a customized laboratory coating and laminating machine.
The new facility enables the production of adhesive systems for tapes, labels, flexible packaging and operational film coatings. The new coater facilitates the alteration of current adhesive formulations to suit new carrier materials and also reduces new product development time. The customer test capacity is also augmented by virtue of the new facility.
At the center of competence, coating experts collaborate with all BASF regional business units and respective research and development centers for adhesive raw materials. The highlight of the competence center is the pilot coater that is engaged in dispersions. The machine which is capable of coating 1800 m in one minute holds the distinction of being the fastest in the world. The new flexible laboratory coater enhances this competency. It can turn out accurate, reproducible coatings of ultraviolet acrylate hotmelt and water-based systems with just one kilo of adhesives.
The coater facilitates pretreatment and lamination of numerous film combinations without any complexity. The installation is part of BASF’s annual innovation drive in which the company invests more than €800,000 towards the maintenance and advancement of its adhesive coating technology.
