ExxonMobil Plans to Invest $200 Million to Expand Chemical and Lubricants Plant in Baton Rouge

ExxonMobil plans to expand its lubricants and chemical plants in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, by investing around $200 million. The new facilities to come up in Baton Rouge as a part of the expansion project will include lubricants packaging, blending and storage units, and manufacturing units for lubricant base stocks.

Construction of the project will begin by end of 2012. Around 45 permanent jobs will be created by the new facilities once production starts in 2014. During the construction process, the project is expected to generate 400 or more construction jobs.

ExxonMobil’s aviation lubricants storage, blending and packaging and base stock manufacturing operations already existing in Edison, New Jersey, will be now replaced by the new Baton Rouge facilities once they start operation. Alkylated naphthalene and synthetic esters, used by marketers and producers of finished lubricants including specialized lubricants for industrial, marine and aviation applications, and also greases, gear oils and vehicle motor oils, will be produced in large quantities by the new chemical plant at Baton Rouge.

ExxonMobil’s expansion project will increase the company’s capacity of alkylated naphthalene and synthetic esters by 25% or more. At the company’s lubricant blending plant in Port Allen, Louisiana, a hi-tech synthetic aviation oil blending center will be constructed as part of the project. Around 145 lubricant products will be manufactured by the 8.3-acre facility with an annual turnover of 90 million gallons.

Port Allen lubricant blending plant’s Manager, Julius Bedford, said that the aviation lubricants blending center that is to come up as part of the project will reflect their commitment to supply aviation lubricant products in a reliable and safe manner.
