Outokumpu’s strong sustainability performance has been recognized again by the Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes (DJSI) in their 2013 review. This is the seventh consecutive year Outokumpu has maintained its membership in the DJSI World. In the 2013 review, Outokumpu is one of the top three steel companies worldwide included in the DJSI World index.
Outokumpu’s overall score improved from the previous year. Outokumpu was particularly recognized for its environmental work and received the highest scores in the industry in the climate strategy and water related risk categories. Positive feedback was also received in the social dimension, where Outokumpu obtained the highest scores in the human capital development.
Says CEO Mika Seitovirta: “At Outokumpu, sustainability is at the core of our vision of world that lasts forever. Stainless steel in itself is such sustainable material because it is durable and 100% recyclable. The recycled content of Outokumpu products is 80% against the industry average of 60%. Our unique track record in sustainable performance is the result of a long-term commitment. Over the past ten years, our environmental investments alone have been over 400 million euros. The recognition we receive is encouraging and spurs us to improve our performance even further.”
The DJSI indexes are ratings that rank the top companies in the economic, environmental and social performance, selected among the largest 2,500 companies worldwide. Their indexes serve as benchmark and reference point for investors and companies alike. The analysis is carried out each year by an independent assessment party RobecoSAM Sustainable Asset Management AG.
