Mariner Fans at Safeco Field to Receive BASF Compost Kits with Ecovio Compostable Bags

BASF announced today that due to popular fan demand, it will sponsor a “Kitchen Caddy” giveaway as part of its Sustainable Saturdays partnership with the Seattle Mariners.

Mariner fans at Safeco Field on Saturday, Sept. 28 will receive a free compost kit with compostable bags made of ecovio®, a partially bio-based resin used to make certified compostable bags for food waste collection. BASF pioneered the development of biodegradable plastics, and ecovio is the premium brand for compostable plastics solutions.

“Sustainable Saturdays are a fun, interactive way to share tips about sustainable living with Mariners’ fans and help transform ways of thinking about zero waste practices,” said Chris Bradlee, Biodegradable Polymers - Market Development Manager, North America, BASF. “The Mariners and Safeco Field are dedicated to sustainable practices such as recycling and composting. Events like the Kitchen Caddy giveaway allow people to take that dedication home with them when they leave the ballpark.”

Already in use throughout kitchens and concessions at Safeco Field, compostable bags made with ecovio are also available in a convenient counter-top size, created with curbside collection in mind. The bags offer a clean, easy way to participate in residential food waste collection programs.

Thanks in part to BASF-sponsored zero waste stations throughout the concourse, the Mariners and their fans already divert more than 86 percent of game-day waste away from local landfills through recycling of plastic bottles and composting of food waste and food service items.

During each Sustainable Saturdays game, Mariners fans can also play the BASF Trivia Challenge game by following along on the MarinersVision video display board located in centerfield. The season-long, ten-game trivia contest offers fans the chance to win a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2.0 with a year of unlimited data from T-Mobile. Questions highlight how one of the greenest clubs in Major League Baseball transformed itself into an eco-hero in less than a decade, and how the Mariners inspire fans to take simple steps to do the same at home.
