Cabot Corporation has been designated the winner of Best Overall Innovation and Innovation with Best Environmental Benefit at the tenth annual ICIS Innovation Awards 2013 for its Cabot aerogel technology for use in eco-friendly building and construction.
The ICIS judging panel of leading industry experts recognized Cabot’s use of open innovation and extensive collaborations to bring to market a technology that is poised to have a dramatic impact on improving energy efficiency, reducing carbon footprints and reducing building energy costs in buildings around the world. Cabot’s aerogel technology is currently being used in a range of commercial and residential building and construction products including plasters, boards, daylighting systems, tensile roofing and coatings. These aerogel-containing products are key enablers in meeting even the most stringent regional and industry building energy standards and codes.
“We are honored to win this prestigious award as it recognizes the benefits of our aerogel technology including effective insulation for considerable reduction in heating and cooling loads, and cost savings during construction and operation. It also rewards the hard work of our research and development team,” said Raj Chary, vice president and general manager, Cabot Aerogel. “As an industry leader in aerogel, we are dedicated to bringing new innovations to the marketplace and helping our commercial partners and customers meet their growing demands. For example, in industrial environments, highly thermal insulative coatings utilizing our aerogel technology can offer measurable energy savings, protection from temperature extremes and process stability.”
Created in 2004, the ICIS Innovation Awards are designed to recognize companies that have made significant steps forward in technological and business innovation, with tangible results. The awards cover five categories: Innovation with Best Environmental Benefit, Best Product Innovation, Best Innovation for Sustainability, Best Innovation by an SME, and Best Business Innovation. They are open to companies around the world, reflecting ICIS's global coverage of the industry. ICIS magazine is a leading global provider of news and information for the chemical and energy sectors.
What is Cabot aerogel?
Sometimes called “frozen smoke,” aerogel is the lightest and best insulating solid in the world. Cabot's aerogel is a hydrophobic aerogel produced as particles. Each particle consists of more than 90 percent air, contained in a structure that prevents heat transfer, for unmatched insulation performance. Cabot produces its aerogel products, including the Lumira® aerogel and Enova® aerogel brands in a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility located near Frankfurt, Germany where it began commercial production in 2003. Cabot certifies it has completed the EU REACH pre-registrations required for all Cabot aerogel products. For more information about Cabot aerogel please visit http://www.cabotaerogel.com.
