WasteExpo 2014: Ruukki to Highlight Wear-Resistant and High-Strength Structural Steels

Finland-based steel company Ruukki will showcase its range of Raex wear-resistant steels and Optim high-strength structural steels at WasteExpo 2014 exhibition in Atlanta, GA, on 29 April - 1 May 2014.

Ruukki has pioneered the use of direct quenching technology. This enables the energy-efficient manufacture of ultra-high-strength Optim structural steels and wear-resistant Raex steels.

Applications in the recycling industry increasingly call for wear-resistant and high-strength steels, which enable lighter structures with a longer lifetime. Examples of applications are dumper trucks, grabs and waste chutes and waste crushers, which are highly susceptible to wear. One very important factor is the weight of waste containers. Ruukki's specialized steels not only make it possible to make lighter containers, but also other types of tipper bodies. Stronger steels mean fewer/thinner support structures, which in turn improves aerodynamic design.

"Machinery and equipment in the recycling industry must be made from material capable of withstanding hard, sharp objects such as lumps of concrete, scrap metal and glass that they are constantly exposed to," says Kevin Kale, General Manager at Ruukki USA Inc.

"Designers can also benefit from the wear resistance and high strength of Ruukki's specialized steels. Nowadays, designers want to make containers from steel that is not only stronger and more wear-resistant than standard steel, but also thinner. Lighter waste containers made from thinner steel plate mean higher payloads and thus fuel savings," adds Kevin Kale.

Ruukki Raex and Optim steels are ideal for the manufacture of machines and containers used in waste transportation, handling and recycling

Ruukki has pioneered the use of direct quenching technology. This enables the energy-efficient manufacture of ultra-high-strength Optim structural steels and wear-resistant Raex steels using hot-rolled steel quenched at about 1650°F to ambient temperature immediately after rolling. This saves energy because the reheating stage after hot-rolling is omitted.

Raex plate thickness produced as coil is ranging from 0.079" up to 0.315" and as a heavy plate from 0.236" up to 3.150". Optim plate thickness produced as coils starts from 0.117" and goes up to 0.468" and Optim as a heavy plate starts from 0.236" and goes up to 2.36". When produced as coils, Raex and Optim grades are temper passed in cut-to-length operation producing dead flat material with excellent surface conditions.

Maximum coil widths are 60". However, Ruukki can also produce up to 177" wide thin sheets using state-of-the-art laser-welding processes. This offers customers the widest possible range of wear-resistant, high-strength and ultra-high-strength steels in these thicknesses.

Ruukki's U.S. operations are centered in Pittsburgh operating as a wholly owned subsidiary under the name Ruukki USA Inc. There is also a Canadian subsidiary, Ruukki Canada Inc., based in Toronto. Ruukki has a strong technical customer service and application support team to help its clients with topics relating to design, welding and fabrication.
