Boeing Donate Nanotechnology Patent to Vanderbilt University

Boeing have generously donated a nanotechnology patent to Vanderbilt University. The patent covers particle separation technology. While originally developed for space applications, it has been re-adapted for ground based operations and is no longer directly applicable to aerospace.

The technology was originally developed to operate in micro-gravity environments to separate cells, proteins and enzymes for pharmaceutical applications. The patent donated by Boeing differs in that it permits higher volume particle separation to be performed on Earth.

The patent involves a process that is an advanced version of Flow Electrophoresis. It has the potential to be able to create new pharmaceuticals. As an example, it is claimed that it can be used for the advanced purification and production of proteins as well as being able to produce pharmaceuticals in commercial quantities at economical costs.

It could also make a valuable contribution to nanotechnology as it enables the creation of materials, devices and systems on a molecular level.
