Noranda have just announced their intention to construct a state-of-the-art facility for recycling of electronic hardware. The proposed plant will be located in Brampton, Ontario in Canada and will result in $3 million worth of capital investment.
The plant will be the first of its kind in Canada and will cater for the growing quantity of electronics that have reached the end of their life. The technology will ensure materials are recycled in such a way that it conserves resources and promotes sustainable development.
The recycling of these materials will reduce the amount that ends up in landfills, reducing the amount of hazardous materials being buried. While initial processing will take place at Brampton, further processing and metals recovery will take place at Noranda’s Quebec facility.
Construction of the Brampton plant reinforces Noranda’s position as a North American leader in electronics recycling, with similar operations in California and Tennessee in the USA. Feedstocks will come from various places and companies throughout Canada, including the manufacturers themselves.
The plant is scheduled to be operational by mid 2003 and is expected to process one million pounds per month of electronics.
