The US Department of Energy has allocated a further $75 million for 13 companies and educational institutions in cost-shared awards for research into advanced fuel cell technology for vehicles, buildings and other applications.
Following President Bush’s 2003 State of the Union Address he pledged $1.2 billion over the next 5 years for hydrogen fuel research. The current $75 million allocation adds to the $21 million previously awarded for hydrogen fuel storage, production and sensor technologies.
The Department of energy is committed to finding alternative fuel sources to reduce dependence on foreign oil, developing sustainable energy initiatives and reducing emissions.
Fuel Cell research will focus on overcoming technical barriers to commercialisation such as durability, cost, heat utilisation and catalyst development. Hydrogen technology research will focus on overcoming technical barriers including hydrogen storage capacity and cost, improving life cycle cost and energy efficiency, improving hydrogen production technologies and sensors.
