Laiwa Steel Licence HIsmelt Technology

China’s Laiwa Steel Group have signed a licence agreement to use Rio Tinto’s HIsmelt technology in an ironmaking plant to be built in China’s Shandong Province.

The proposed plant will be a replica of plant currently under construction in Kwinana, Western Australia. This plant is a joint venture between Rio Tinto, Nucor, Mitsubishi Corp and Shougang Corp.

The technology is direct smelting process that uses iron ore fines and/or other iron containing materials, as well as non-coking coals. These materials are injected into a molten bath of iron to product high quality iron. The product materials are suitable for use in electric arc furnaces, while the process offers an alternative to traditional blast furnace technology.
