Explosion Forces Closure of Nippon Steel Plant

Nippon Steel has been forced to temporarily close its Nagoya plant after being rocked by an explosion. The explosion was so powerful that it shattered windows up to 1.5 kms away.

Nippon Steel is Japan’s largest producer of steel, with the Nagoya plant producing 5.9 million tonnes of steel a year and is the third largest in the company. It is a major supplier to Japan’s largest auto manufacturer, Toyota, as well as being a supplier to Honda and the electronics industry.

The explosion took place in a 50m high coke gas storage tank. The explosion and subsequent fire injured 15 workers. All received only minor injuries after being struck by shards of glass.
