Bayer Commence Construction of Chinese Polycarbonate Plant

Bayer have expanded their presence in China by investing US$450 million in a new polycarbonate plant in Caojing, Shanghai. A ground breaking ceremony for the new plant was held today.

The new plant will have a production capacity of 200,000 tons per year, with production to start in the second quarter of 2006.

Bayer markets polycarbonate under the name Makrolon, which is used in applications such as CD’s and DVD’s, headlight lenses, glazing and roofing systems.

Bayer also have plans for building a further two plants at the Caojing site. These plants will produce polyisocyanates and HDI. Production capacities for these two materials will be 11,000 and 30,000 tons per annum, with construction completions dues in 2004 and 2006 respectively.
