Cell-Con, Inc, a Pennsylvania-based manufacturer of battery assemblies and charging systems, announces the availability of new, high capacity (up to 25Ah and greater) li-poly battery packs and charging solutions. The thin shape of these new lithium polymer low and high power systems allow for lighter and slimmer products, with the capability of fitting into the same space as cylindrical lithium ion products (20% lighter), and double the capacity of nickel metal hydride cells. The new li-poly battery packs are typically charged with smart battery chargers to ensure proper charging of the assembly.
Some of the new product's key features include intrinsic safety and up to 85C discharge capability. The cells are flame and explosion resistant and smart battery functionality is available, from packs to smart battery chargers.
"UL 1642 allows for total battery and system quantification," said Mike Mumma, Cell-Con president, "and design assistance is available for SMBus, gas gauging and additional level 3 characteristics."
Cell-Con's research and development has been focused on delivering high capacity battery packs that provide long run time and high discharge rates, for medical, instrumentation, RFID, and robotics fields. These packs are charged using smart battery chargers, are protected against reverse polarity and short circuits, include circuitry for pack protection and cell balancing functionality, and the ability for authentication or encryption coding.
Mumma added, "Lithium polymer allows for 100 percent utilization of the power contained in the cells and can provide more than 500 cycles. No venting is required and no caustic emissions take place as in lead acid technology." Lithium polymer and lithium ion cells have become the industry standard due to their high capacity and longer operating times compared to nickel metal hydride, nickel cadmium, and sealed lead acid cell chemistries.
