Generally speaking, conventional “elevator” furnaces, otherwise known as “bottom loaders”, utilize a mechanism in which the load platform, or kiln car, is elevated into the furnace body. As the furnace body is motionless, the insulation and interior elements are protected. Conversely, the alternative “top hat” apparatus lowers the furnace body over the platform or kiln car.

This means that the furnace body is in motion, causing many to believe that the design causes damage from vibration. However, any such risk can be mitigated with a well-designed lift system. Indeed, there are three important reasons why the “top hat” design is preferable to that of a “bottom loader.” These reasons, which will be summarised below, comprise: application requirements; ergonomics; and maintenance.
