Introduction
Aluminium / Aluminum alloys have strong corrosion resistance
characteristics and high electrical conductivity. These alloys are
sensitive to high temperatures ranging between 200 and 250°C (392 and
482°F) and tend to lose their strength. They are good low-temperature
alloys and gain strength when exposed to subzero temperatures.
Aluminium / Aluminum 5086 alloy is a high strength structural alloy.
The following datasheet provides an overview of Aluminium / Aluminum
5086 alloy.

Fabrication and Heat Treatment
Annealing
Aluminium / Aluminum 5086 alloy is annealed at 343°C (650°F) and
then cooled in air.
Cold Working
Aluminium / Aluminum 5086 alloy has excellent cold working
characteristics in the O temper and less good H38 and H36 tempers.
Welding
Conventional methods are suitable for welding Aluminium / Aluminum
5086 alloy. Excellent results can be obtained when electric arc welding
is used for this alloy.
Forging
Aluminium / Aluminum 5086 alloy can be forged.
Forming
Aluminium / Aluminum 5086 alloy has excellent forming
characteristics in the O temper and less good characteristics in H38
and H36 tempers.
Machinability
Aluminium / Aluminum 5086 alloy has good machining characteristics
in the strain hardened tempers that include H38, H36 and H34.
Heat Treatment
Aluminium / Aluminum 5086 alloy is a non-heat treatable alloy.
Hot Working
The Aluminium / Aluminum 5086 alloy has excellent cold forming
characteristics that do not usually require hot working.
Hardening
Aluminium / Aluminum 5086 alloy can be hardened only by being cold
worked.
Applications
Aluminium / Aluminum 5086 alloy is used in missile components,
unfired and welded pressure vessels, auto aircraft cryogenics, TV
towers, drilling rigs, transportation equipment, tanks and marine
components.
