Siemens Receive Contract to Supply New Plate Mill and Modnernizing Existing Rolling Line

Siemens VAI Metals Technologies has received orders from China's Shougang International Trade & Engineering Corporation, Beijing, to supply a new 5-meter plate mill and modernize an existing rolling line.

The rolling mill is to be built near Tangshan Shougang Baoye Iron and Steel Co. Ltd. (Shougang Baoye) in Tangshan City and is scheduled to start operating in the middle of 2010. A 3.5-meter plate mill planned by Shougang Baoye itself will be fitted out with a Mulpic intensive cooling section and new drive systems. The installation work is scheduled for completion by the beginning of 2010. The total volume of the orders amounts to around 70 million euros.

With an annual production of over 12 million metric tons, the Shougang Group is one of China's leading steel producers. Shougang is currently expanding its heavy-plate capacities at Tangshan Shougang Baoye Iron and Steel Co. Ltd. in Hebei province by installing equipment for the production of wide plate for ship-building and pipeline construction.

The new 5-meter plate mill will have two stands. Siemens VAI is to engineer and supply the mechanical equipment for the roughing and finishing stands as well as the main drives for both stands. Their synchronous motors will be supplied with power via Sinamics SM150 DC link converters. The scope of supply also includes a Mulpic intensive cooling section, hot and cold levelers as well as a shearing line with cropping shears, double-side trimming shears, dividing shears and cut-to-length shears. All the instrumentation and automation systems, including all the process models for the rolling mill, are also part of the order.

Siemens VAI is to supply Mulpic intensive cooling equipment and the main drive systems for a 3.5-meter plate mill that the customer is engineering with the help of local companies. This will mean that the production facility can produce high-quality grades of steel as well. Siemens will also be responsible for supervising the installation work, for commissioning and for customer training. The systems and components used on the rolling lines belong to the integrated “Siroll PM” solution platform for plate mills.
