The Dow Chemical’s subsidiary, Dow Global Technologies (DGTL) has developed a new brominated Polymeric Flame Retardant (Polymeric FR), which is anticipated to set a new benchmark for flame retardants utilized in expanded polystyrene and extruded polystyrene foam insulation applications.
The Polymeric FR is a high molecular weight, stable, non-toxic, non-bioaccumulative, non-persistent material. It has successfully undergone a strong and comprehensive Environment, Health & Safety test. It offers better fire retardant solution for expanded polystyrene and extruded polystyrene foams and allows these materials to meet the stringent global energy efficiency standards.
The Polymeric FR is a sustainable substitute for hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD). DGTL also proclaimed that it has inked its first licensing deal with Chemtura. As per the deal, Chemtura’s unit, Great Lakes Solutions will manufacture and market the Polymeric FR for expanded polystyrene and extruded polystyrene foam insulation applications. At present, DGTL is in discussion with other companies for licensing prospects and will finalize the new deals by the end of 2011.
Polymeric FR licensees would stock interim amounts of the material throughout 2011to facilitate market qualifications and formulation optimization. The licensees would construct large plants for Polymeric FR in 2012. The Polymeric FR will be commercially available in large quantities by 2013-2015. The time period will enable a smooth transition to the Polymeric FR technology.
