DuPont to Increase Specialty Copolymer Production Capacity

DuPont Packaging & Industrial Polymers today announced that it will increase capacity at its site at Dordrecht, Netherlands, to meet strong demand for specialty copolymers, DuPont Bynel adhesive resins, DuPont Fusabond modifier resins and DuPont Appeel lidding sealants used in packaging, construction and industrial markets. The expansion enhances the company's global network of manufacturing capabilities which includes sites in the North America, Europe and Asia Pacific.

These specialty copolymers will be available from Dordrecht starting July 2011. According to DuPont, the investment enables improved supply reliability to all regions and another platform for new products and technology development.

"Investing to increase capacity accelerates DuPont's ability to respond to rapidly growing demand worldwide, particularly in Central Europe and Asia," said Carolann Haznedar, global business director - DuPont Ethylene Copolymers. "It also supports our customers' drive for more sustainable solutions. Fusabond enables reuse of mixed plastic waste streams. Bynel plays a critical role in reducing the amount of material in multi-layer packaging structures and Appeel adds sustainability benefits for package convenience features."

DuPont's broad product portfolio enables the company to serve diverse and changing needs and respond to top industry demands. Packaging professionals who responded to a recent DuPont survey identified the need for solutions that improve package sustainability, reduce waste/cost and improve performance as the top issues facing the industry.

Fusabond resins are modified polymers that help bond dissimilar polymers used in toughened, filled and blended compounds to help facilitate recycling. In addition to typical applications in industrial goods, its compatibilization effectiveness creates added value for post-consumer package recycling programs by enabling higher value applications for the recycled material.

Bynel coextrudable adhesive resins, often called "tie layers," help packaging manufacturers bring together and optimize barrier, heat-seal and other functions in multi-layer structures such as films, bottles, tubes and thermoformable sheets. DuPont offers the packaging industry's broadest selection of these specialized resins.

Appeel solvent-free lidding sealant helps ensure sustainability in package convenience features by replacing solvent-based lacquers, which are either vented to the environment or require an energy-intensive recovery process.

DuPont Packaging & Industrial Polymers manufactures an extensive mix of adhesive, barrier, peelable lidding and sealant resins and provides a globally networked development team to work with customers on packaging programs that help protect the product, reduce impacts on the environment, improve shelf appeal, convenience and reduce cost in the food, cosmetics, medical products and other consumer goods and industrial packaging industries.
