Amyris, an integrated renewable products firm, has commissioned its third Biofene commercial production facility. The industrial-scale plant is sited at Tate & Lyle Ingredients Americas’ facility in Decatur, Illinois.
It is Amyris’ first facility in the U.S, which will help to expand the production capacity of Biofene, renewable farnesene and to meet the global demand for renewable products.
Amyris has planned to market Biofene directly for industrial applications or to process Biofene into different renewable products such as diesel, finished lubricants, base oil and squalane. The renewable products can be produced from renewable farnesene by applying simple chemical finishing steps.
Amyris’ CEO, John Melo stated that commissioning of the third production facility signifies the company’s commitment to establish the manufacturing capacity in the U.S. The integration of Tate & Lyle Bulk Ingredients’ wide bio-based products’ expertise and commercial knowledge with industrial synthetic biology platform of Amyris offers sustainable alternatives to the market that can have both economical and environmental advantages.
In addition to the commissioning of the third commercial facility, Amyris is expanding production in the U.S., Europe and Brazil via five manufacturing partnerships. The collaborations include agreements with Tate & Lyle, Paraíso Bioenergia, Biomin do Brasil Nutriҫão Animal and Antibióticos; and a joint venture with one of Brazil’s leading sugar and ethanol producers.
