K2 Pure Solutions and Dow Chemical announced successful completion and opening of a new chlor-alkali manufacturing facility in Pittsburg, California.
The facility will produce bleach for municipal water treatment plants in Northern California and will also support Dow’s Pittsburg operations by supplying chlorine to manufacture crop protection products and other raw materials.
K2 Pure operates the state-of-the-art facility located at Dow’s Pittsburg site. The agreement also includes leasing of an additional facility to Dow, which is operated by K2 Pure to produce chlorine for Dow’s use. The plant provides an opportunity for the future growth of Dow through secure, consistent and competitive supply.
The two facilities have total capacity to produce 460 Mlbs of chlor-alkali products per year. K2 Pure uses salt-to-bleach technology to manufacture bleach and chlor-alkali products. In addition, K2 Pure will recycle 100% of hydrogen produced from the plant and use them to generate clean energy that can be used to power the Pittsburg facility eliminating carbon dioxide emission.
Mike Gambrell, Executive Vice President of Dow, stated that the successful start-up of the new chlor-alkali plant is a part of Dow’s 2015 sustainability goals and it also contributes to the company’s initiatives to minimize delivery of hazardous materials.
