LAN Airlines, based in Chile, will be the launch customer for the Pratt & Whitney PW6000 engine. LAN's engines will power 15 firm Airbus A318 aircraft for a total of 34 engines (30 installed and 4 spares). A long-term maintenance agreement is included.
The PW6000 is designed to provide the lowest total cost of ownership for the 100-passenger aircraft market and offers a thrust range of 18,000 to 24,000 pounds. The engine was designed for long on-wing time and reliability in the demanding, high-cycle environment of the single aisle market. The design of this engine provides the highest level of maintainability on wing, which is critical in this market segment with very short turn times between flights. The PW6000 meets or exceeds all existing worldwide environmental regulations as well as currently known standards that will apply in the future.
In June, the PW6000 was the first "all new" engine to be validated by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA). It is expected to achieve EASA aircraft/engine certification on the A318 in October 2005.
