NPL Launches New e-Learning Courses on Measurement Uncertainty

The National Physical Laboratory (NPL) has just launched two new e-Learning courses that provide a comprehensive introduction to measurement uncertainty. The materials have been specifically developed to make this complex topic easily accessible, understandable and applicable to daily practice - maximising efficiency and productivity.

Introduction to Measurement Uncertainty is a certified e-Learning course aimed at revealing the concepts and how risks are estimated to sustain good decision-making in practical contexts, such as in manufacturing and regulation.

Measurement Uncertainty Explained is the second online open unit from NPL's 'Measurement Explained' series. It introduces students to the basics of measurement uncertainty, along with some underpinning concepts such as 'error', 'standard deviation', and 'probability distributions'.

It is a known fact that even successful, high precision, measurement is inexact to some degree and has some level of uncertainty. However, this concept is typically regarded as an advanced field of study, where the complexity of its underpinning concepts inhibits its understanding and obscures its use - negatively impacting business.

David Brown, General Manager for Hexagon Metrology UK, has praised NPL's e-Learning:

"The aim of NPL is to deliver on-demand measurement training to students, apprentices and employees through its new e-Learning programme. Users can benefit by accessing the latest measurement knowledge via their PCs, tablets or smartphones, which will help increase the level of these business critical skills, vital to raising productivity."

NPL was the first National Measurement Institute (NMI) to offer e-learning training solutions optimised for mobile devices to a worldwide audience. In addition, the new e-Learning Programme complements NPL's expanding training resources. Trainees can now choose to partake in tutored classroom courses, online self-paced courses or blended learning courses - an approach that blends face-to-face teaching focused on hands-on, real world, practical application with online self-paced lessons.
