Corning Optical Fibre Receives R+D 100 Award

Corning Incorporated will receive R+D Magazine's respected 2008 R+D 100 Award for its innovative ClearCurve(TM) optical fiber at a ceremony this evening in Chicago, Ill. The award recognizes the 100 most technologically significant new products of the year.

This is the sixth industry award that Corning ClearCurve fiber has received since its introduction in 2007. Corning has previously won this award for technologies such as LEAF® optical fiber, MetroCor® optical fiber and Polarcor™ polarizing glass.

“We are honored to have ClearCurve fiber recognized in the industry as one of the most technologically significant products of the year,” said Martin J. Curran, senior vice president and general manager, Corning Optical Fiber. “In the development of ClearCurve fiber, we had our customers’ needs in mind. The main objective was to manufacture a fiber with vastly improved macrobend performance to allow carriers to design optical fiber into much more challenging installation environments. We believe this fiber technology will continue to open new application spaces to the bandwidth benefits of optical fiber.”

The ClearCurve fiber solution is hundreds of times more bendable than standard single-mode fiber. Featuring Corning's breakthrough nanoStructuresTM technology, ClearCurve optical fiber can be bent around very tight corners with virtually no signal loss while maintaining backward compatibility with the installed base of optical fiber. This fiber enables the construction of rugged drop cables for multi-dwelling unit installation that can be handled in the same way that copper communication cables are handled, such as pulling through wall studs and stapling to wood.
