Allegheny to Invest in Two New Electric Arc Furnaces

Allegheny Technologies have just announced that their Allegheny Ludlum melt shop in Pennsylvania will be undergoing a major upgrade in order to reduce operating costs and increase productivity.

They are spending an estimated $35 million to install two 110 ton high powered electric arc furnaces. The first of them is expected to be up and running by December 2003, while the second will come on line 12 months later. These new furnaces will replace 4, 5- year old furnaces.

Through the installation of the new furnaces, the company estimates savings of over $20 million per year. They will also help to increase productivity and efficiency throughout the plant. This plant is their flagship melt shop producing a range of 200, 300 and 400 grade stainless steels.

The upgrades are consistent with the company’s objectives to pursue projects that will bring high returns on capital employed.
