MTM Metalizing, a pioneer in thermal spray coating, has announced the completion of the thermal spray application coating on Bluewater Energy Services’ vehicle, Akoa Mizu.
Bluewater Energy Services constructs and operates floating production and storage offshore vessels. The Akoa Mizu, measuring 42 m height and 248.12 m length, is mainly utilized as a secure and stable floating platform for gas and oil manufacturing activities. It is also employed for other offshore operations such as synthesizing and segregating incoming well effluent into gas, water and oil.
The seawater environment and the presence of hydrogen sulfide and CO2 in gaseous forms increase the hazard of corrosion on the Akoa Mizu. Hence, a thermal spray zinc coating was applied on the vessel’s flare boom.
MTM Metalizing’s General Manager, Bill Jordan commented that the zinc coating on the vessel’s flare boom will offer superior and durable protection when compared to competitive anti-corrosion methods.
Jordan further said that although the initial expenditure of the thermal spray coating is higher, it reduces maintenance expenditure throughout the life of the project, ensuing savings for Bluewater Energy Services. As a floating production and offloading system, the Akoa Mizu needs to stay on the corrosive offshore environment for up to 10 years with no dry-docking for maintenance and hence demands MTM’s zinc coating application, he added.
