JEC Asia 2011 reached new heights with a larger offer of new composite materials, a wider range of composites applications and a stronger international presence. Demonstrating the buoyant outlook for the composites industry in Asia, JEC Asia 2011 registered a 10 percent increase in exhibition space and the attendance of 7,000 visitors.
The Asian composites industry is currently valued at US$24.8 billion (S$31.5 billion). The three-day JEC Asia 2011 event provided a platform for business deals and announcements that reflected the dynamism of a growing market that is projected to make up 51 percent of the worldwide composites market by 2015.
"The composites industry is forging a bright future with efficient, sustainable innovations showcased at JEC Asia," says Frédérique Mutel, President and CEO of JEC Group. "Visitors to JEC Asia 2011 were impressed by the scale of developments in advanced specialty resins, glass fiber and carbon fiber, as well as how these innovations are utilized in significant market applications."
One of key application areas for composites end use is the construction and infrastructure industry. With new innovations range from the application of fiber reinforced pipes to improve water delivery systems to new road infrastructure concepts based on the use of high performance composite materials, composite materials bring great advantages because of its light weight and high strength characteristics.
At JEC Asia 2011, the Japanese pavilion showcased an innovative use of composite materials to build a makeshift house that can be set up in 60 minutes by four people and used as emergency shelter in the occurrence of tsunami or flooding.
"The wind energy sector is also showing great promise," Mutel adds. "Wind turbine blade suppliers are utilizing advanced composites technologies increasingly in Asia, and two major wind energy companies have recently opened research centers in Singapore to lead the development."
For its fifth edition next year, to be held in Singapore from 26 to 28 June 2012, JEC Asia aims to reinforce its status as the leading composites platform in the Asia Pacific region and build on this year's success by continuing to showcase emerging composites innovations.
