The Milan Polytechnic and Pirelli have entered into a three-year Joint Lab deal for training and research in the tire industry.
As per the deal, research will be conducted on F1 tires with statistical models that imitate tire behavior by means of wear and grip in association with the roughness of the different circuits’ surfaces. The research will also involve advancement of materials such as biopolymers, nanocharges and de-vulcanization of tires and the development of intelligent tire or Cyber Tire with mathematical models that enable the chip present in the intelligent tire to ‘interpret’ the various conditions of the surface of the road.
Concerning the training activities, the Milan Polytechnic will concentrate on hiring, appointment, and teaching of engineers located in Mexico, China and Brazil. Pirelli and the Milanese institution have involved in several partnerships. Pirelli and the Polytechnic have also established the ‘Fondamenti Chimici della Tecnologia della Gomma e dei Compositi’ facility to research on nanotechnology applications and advanced materials for developing next-generation of tires.
The Chairman of Pirelli, Marco Tronchetti Provera stated that the deal inked with the Milan Polytechnic reinforces an already established partnership and complements the company’s involvement in research and training. The company believes that Joint Labs, a representation of partnership between industry and university, will deliver innovations in the fields that are strategically important for the future of the company’s sector, he added.
