New EPD Approval Further Enhances Sustainability Performance of Outokumpu Stainless Steels

Complementing existing environmental product declarations (EDP), Outokumpu has released EPD for both long products and stainless rebar used in the construction industry.

Environmental product declarations are built on life-cycle data and help calculating sustainability performance over a product’s life cycle. Outokumpu has previously issued environmental product declarations for construction for hot-rolled and cold-rolled stainless steel flat products. EDP are issued by German program holder IBU - Institut Bauen und Umwelt e.V.

The new EPD not only enhance the exceptional sustainability performance of Outokumpu stainless steels, but also contribute further to the establishment of ever more sustainable building. The stainless rebar EPD also complements the recent approval by the CARES Sustainable Reinforcing Steel Scheme in 2012.

Says Steve Jones, Product and Market Development Manager: “The EPD provide our customers with the confidence of knowing that the environmental performance of our products has been reviewed and validated by an independent third party with expertise in life cycle analysis. Furthermore, many client groups wish to calculate the embodied carbon of their development projects and information included in an EPD can help them to do so.”
