High Frequency Switch 'Transforms' the Future

Griffith School of Engineering Associate Professor Junwei Lu has developed the patented High Frequency Planar Transformer for Switch Mode Power supplies.

Switch mode power supplies are used in many consumer electronic products including computers, mobile phones, mobile communication equipment such as PDAs and medical instruments.

The operating frequency of conventional switches is limited to 500KHz, but the new transformer technology is capable of operating to 10MHz.

“This technology will be low cost, small in size and have high power efficiency,” Associate Professor Lu said.

“This transformer has an elegant, simple design and is especially suitable for smaller electronic devices such as mobile phones, PDAs and many other electronic devices we now use in every day life.”

To provide access to this technology for industrial organisations, Associate Professor Lu will present his research at the Commercialisation Expo in Melbourne this week, from June 18 to 20, where he will be available to meet with potential industry partners interested in partnering with the research team to take this exciting new technology to the market.
