Sumitomo/Lyondell to Build Propylene Glycol Plant

Nihon Oxirane, the joint venture of Sumitomo Chemical and Lyondell Chemical Company intend to build a propylene glycol plant in Chiba, Japan.

The proposed plant is due for completion before the end of 2004 and will have a capacity of 100,000 tons. The plant will license technology from Lyondell and use their Asian marketing network.

The joint venture already manufactures propylene oxide which from which propylene glycol is derived. Nihon Oxirane currently sells propylene oxide into the Asian and Middle Eastern markets.

Propylene glycol is used in products such as surfactants, food additives, moisturizers and personal care products.
