Cabot Corp Forms Chinese JV to Produce Fumed Silica

Cabot Corp’s wholly owned subsidiary, Cabot (China) have entered into a joint venture with Bluestar New Chemical Materials Co. Ltd, part of China National Bluestar Group. Under the agreement the two will manufacture fumed silica in China.

The joint venture will be called Cabot Bluestar Chemical Company of which Cabot will own 90% and Bluestar will own 10%.

They expect to invest $30million in the new plant that will be located in the Jianxi Province of China. Construction of the new plant is expected to begin in Spring 2004, with completion due late in 2005.

The proposed plant will be the first state-of-the-art fumed silica plant in China, with the project receiving the backing of the Jiangxi government. Output from the plant will help the growth of the Chinese silicones market.
