Stanwell may Still Get a Magnesium Smelter

Despite the demise of the Australian Magnesium Corp’s project at Stanwell in Australia, it is possible that Stanwell may still get a magnesium smelter.

Australian-based Magnesium International have revealed that they have been looking into alternative locations to the current Port Pirie site in South Australia to host their intended magnesium smelter that may prove more economically viable. To this end they have evaluated four other sites of which three are in Queensland and the fourth in Victoria.

The have found that the Stanwell alternative offers a good mix of reasonably priced power and close proximity top an ore source, while there exists several potential locations within the Stanwell Industrial Park to build the smelter that have already been designated for light metals production. Furthermore, these sites offer the potential for expanded capacity should the need arise.

Magnesium International will now move to the second stage of evaluation which will compare the sites at Stanwell and Port Pirie.
