Background
The chemical formula for Zirconium Nitride is ZrN.
Zirconium nitride has excellent erosion resistance and exhibits high hardness, good lubricity and ductility. These properties also make it an attractive coating material. Such coatings are deposited using processes like physical vapour deposition.
It takes the form of a yellow crystalline powder or an attractive pale golden coloured coating.

Applications
Zirconium nitride is used as a hard coating for machine tools like drill bits and burs. These coatings are deposited by physical vapour deposition. Zirconium nitride coated tools are suited to non-ferrous metal applications like the machining of aluminium alloys, brasses, copper alloys and titanium.
