With technological advancements in 3D printing it won’t be long until we see 3D printers becoming more commercial and being a part of consumer homes.
Wobbleworks, an emerging technology company, have taken 3D printing to a whole new level, creating the world’s first 3D printing pen – the 3Doodler.
Similar to 3D printing, the 3Doodler uses ABS or PLA plastic as its "ink". The plastic is extruded from the metal tip that can reach temperatures of around 270C.
One main advantage of the 3Doodler comes from the choice of plastic, offering both ABS and PLA.

ABS is a common plastic that is used on most consumer products whereas, PLA is a biodegradable plastic made from corn. It has a lower melting point and is sometimes known as “bioplastic”.

Peter Dilworth, Co-Founder & CEO of WobbleWorks stated “We wanted to design a 3D printing device that could be used within minutes, without needing any technical knowledge, software or computers. We also wanted it to be affordable as well as fun, so that anyone could 3Doodle!”
Using 3mm of plastic that is heated to the tip, “writers” can draw on paper, trace, build 3D structures, and scribble in mid-air.
Currently the 3Doodler has raised over $2.3 million dollars, which has eclipsed the proposed $30 thousand dollars and will retail at $99 dollars.

Co-founder Maxwell Bogue goes onto state, “Everyone knows how to use a pen, so we designed a 3D printing pen! If you can scribble, trace or wave a finger in the air you can use a 3Doodler. As you draw, plastic comes out of the pen, is cooled by an integrated fan, and solidifies right in front of you. You can draw on any surface and lift it up into the air to create your own 3D objects.”
With a choice of two different types of plastic, including a “bioplastic”, as well as the consumer appeal, this could be a product that could take 3D Printing capabilities to a new level.
