PetroChina Select Basell Technology for New Polyethylene Plants

PetroChina Company Ltd. has selected Basell’s Hostalen technology for two new high density polyethylene plants; a 300 KT per year plant in Chengdu, Sichuan province, and a 350 KT per year plant in Fushun, Liaoning province, China. Start-up for both plants is expected to be in 2011.

“We are very pleased that PetroChina has selected the Hostalen process technology for their two latest world scale petrochemical complex investments,” said Just Jansz, president of Basell’s Technology Business. “PetroChina, the largest oil and petrochemical company in China, implemented a full competitive evaluation of licensed HDPE technologies that could meet their film, blow molding and pipe application requirements which are critical for the projected growth in this region.”

Basell’s Technology Services group has also been working closely with PetroChina to optimize products for special market requirements on their existing Hostalen process plant in Jilin province, China. “Looking toward the future, we are pleased to be extending our partnership with PetroChina in order to continue to meet their needs,” said Jansz.

According to Jansz, “PetroChina’s double license further reinforces the Hostalen process’ leading position in slurry technology for the manufacture of bi-modal HDPE products, with 6 million tons of licensed capacity worldwide. The main drivers for this growth have been the process’ ability to produce a broad product range for demanding applications, with renowned operational stability.”
