The Dow Chemical Company is introducing new polyolefin dispersions (PODs) for carpet applications that deliver the performance characteristics of polyolefins, with the benefits of waterborne application systems. Enabled by Dow’s proprietary BLUEWAVE™ Technology, these PODs allow manufactures to apply thermoplastic carpet backing using conventional coating equipment. Unlike many carpet backing technologies that are available today, Polyolefin Dispersions enabled by BLUEWAVE™ Technology are thermoplastic, not thermoset, which facilitates easier recycling at the end of the carpet’s life.
“A thermoplastic backing offers a wide variety of potential environmental and commercial benefits such as enhanced recyclability, excellent physical properties, and differentiation in the marketplace,” said Todd Crook, global marketing manager, Dow Carpet Latex. “ Polyolefin dispersions are low odor products, and are excellent candidates for a variety of end use carpet applications, including modular tile pre-coats, commercial/residential broadloom carpet, thermo-moldable products, and artificial turf systems.”
“BLUEWAVE Technology exemplifies Dow’s commitment to sustainable chemistry and our material science expertise,” said Crook “The increased ease of recyclability of carpet backed with BLUEWAVE Technology addresses a pressing issue the building and construction industry has battled for years.”
In addition to the sustainability attributes, PODs enabled by BLUEWAVE™ Technology impart excellent physical properties to carpeting including excellent wet strength, outstanding tuft lock strength and the potential for lighter weights.
