PPG Industries’ Addition of Flake Pigments Boasts Vibrant Finishing

PPG Industries' automotive refinish business recently introduced Ditzler Big Flake pigments to its Vibrance Collection finishes line of custom colors and special effect coatings.

Ditzler Big Flake pigments comprise six large, metallic flakes that produce a unique “retro” look when added to a basecoat or clearcoat finish. The new Ditzler Big Flake pigments are available in silver, gold and four color-shifting options (green to purple, blue to red, red to gold and gold to silver).

Ditzler Big Flake pigments can be added directly to the basecoat or used as a ground coat for Radiance II mid-coats by PPG to create an exceptional old-style special-effect finish. It can also be added to color blenders or Radiance II coatings to create a mid-coat/pearl-coat effect.

Randy Cremeans, manager, collision segments, North America, PPG Automotive Refinish, said, “The product is named ‘Ditzler’ after the Ditzler Color Company, founded in 1902 and purchased by the Pittsburgh Plate Glass Company in 1928. Known as PPG today, the company marketed automotive refinish products under the Ditzler name until 1986. Many of our custom finishers used Ditzler products over the years and are very nostalgic about the name. We felt Ditzler Big Flake pigments was an appropriate name for this ‘retro-looking’ product.”
