UPM Receives Golden Cylinder Award for Technical Innovation

UPM has been awarded a Golden Cylinder in the annual GAA (Gravure Association of America) Golden Cylinder Awards Competition in September. The award was granted in the Technical Innovation category.

UPM participated in the competition with the new UPM iRoll service concept. The new service, called the "iRoll portable solution" offers unique possibilities for trouble shooting and optimising the press performance. This technology, only available from UPM, brings the press performance analysis to a totally new level.

"It is good to be a winner in a fierce competition like this. Both the evaluation and judging of the entries is done by a highly qualitative team put together from industry and academic professionals. This is not the first time UPM gets awarded by GAA though, it has happened twice before. But this is the first time in the innovations category, of which we are really proud of," says Erik Ohls, Technical Marketing Director of UPM.

"We're one of the largest suppliers of gravure magazine printing papers in North America," said Ian Hamilton, Manager, Product and Technical Services, UPM North America. "The GAA Golden Cylinder awards recognised the quality and performance of UPM paper through our customers' awards in the Publication category with our light weight coated (under 40-lb.) and coated (over 40-lb.) papers."

In the same ceremony Erik Ohls was awarded a membership in the very prestigious GAA Cylinder Society and he received a golden pin to mark the honour. There are less than 200 people in the world (now one in Finland) that have been given this honour over the last 30 years. The membership is given to industry leaders who have rendered outstanding or extraordinary contributions to the Gravure Industry.
