Third Smart Systems Integration Conference and Exhibition to Take Place in Brussels

The third SMART SYSTEMS INTEGRATION, European Conference & Exhibition on Integration Issues of Miniaturized Systems – MEMS, MOEMS, ICs and Electronic Components, takes place on 10 -11 March 2009 in Brussels.

SMART SYSTEMS INTEGRATION is the European communication platform for industry and research institutes on the subject of Smart Systems Integration. The conference takes up both reports from research close to applications and practice-orientated from the industry. In March 2009 over 80 authors from 19 countries will present their current results on the subject.

Smart Systems will have a significant impact on the competitiveness of entire sectors as aeronautics, automotives, security, logistics, medical technology and process engineering. They will consequently contribute to solving major socio-economic problems in health, environment, mobility and other domains.” says Professor Thomas Gessner, Conference Chairman of SMART SYSTEMS INTEGRATION and Director of Fraunhofer Institution for Electronic Nano Systems ENAS.

In the conference sessions, each one consisting of three to nine lectures, individual fields of application of smart systems will be reflected. Lectures regarding technological aspects, new components and concrete practice-orientated are included in the program. The keynote lectures are a good example for the range of topics which will be covered during the two days of the conference:

At the beginning of the conference on Tuesday, 10 March, Augusto de Albuquerque, European Commission will present „Smart Systems Integration and private-public Initiatives for R&D in Europe“. Klaus Schymanietz, EADS, will focus on the future aspect in his lecture “The Future of Smart Systems”. Then the first practice-orientated example will be presented by Bert Gyselinckx, IMEC-NL, a colleague of this year’s local Co-Chair Prof. Dr. Chris von Hoof, gives a lecture on “Wearable healthcare applications of wireless sensor systems”.

On the second day of the conference, 11 March 2009, the participants will look forward to the practice-orientated lectures of “A trip from a tube to a chip – Applications of Lab-on-chip systems for rapid detection and identification of pathogens in food, animal production and life sciences” presented by Dang Dong Bang, National Veterinary Institute of the Technical University of Denmark as well as “Chip integrated fuel cells and fuel cell accumulators” presented by Holger Reinecke, IMTEK, University of Freiburg.

The conference sessions will begin after the keynote lectures and will cover the following topics:

  • Reliability and Test of Components and Systems
  • Component and Systems Design
  • Nanotechnology and New Materials for Smart Systems
  • System Integration and Packaging
  • Advanced Micro and Nano Technologies
  • Assembly and Interconnect Technologies
  • Smart MedTech Systems
  • Sensor Networks
  • Systems for Logistic Applications
  • Smart Systems for Automotive, Security and Aeronautics

Approximately 40 poster presentations finalize the lecture program. Within two poster sessions the authors of the posters will be available for questions and discussions.

Under the direction of Pierre Lambert, Université Libre de Bruxelles, a two-hour tutorial will take place regarding the topic „Fluidic assembly and capillary forces: modeling, experiments and case studies “. For all conference participants who are interested in this topic, it’s a great opportunity to intensively exchange ideas and thoughts.

In the conference program, there is a session track complied by EPoSS – the European Technology Platform for Smart Systems Integration. Within these tracks subject of areas will be EPoSS Joint Technology Initiative (JTI), Technology Priorities and Internet of Things.

This year’s conference will be supplemented by a Pre-Conference Field Trip on 9 March, 2009. There will be a spouse program for partners and family of the conference participants- this gives them the opportunity to become acquainted with the Brussels, the “Capital of Europe”.
