Hydro Producing Cylinder Heads for Ford/PSA Bi-Turbo Diesel Engines

Hydro supports the strong market trend towards lighter-weight, large-volume diesel engines through the delivery of aluminium cylinder heads for the new Ford/PSA Bi-Turbo Diesel engine.

Hydro Aluminium Castings will present the properties of this product on 5 and 6 October at the Aachen Colloquium for Automotive and Engine Technology, which will be held at Eurogress, Aachen in Germany.

The new 2.7-litre engine, used in car models such as the Jaguar S-Type, Land Rover and Peugeot 607, ranks among the best performers in its class, also meeting the requirements of the EURO4 emission standard. This achievement is largely due to the cylinder head. Developed and produced at Hydro's foundry Mandl&Berger in Linz, Austria, using Hydro's proprietary Rotacast® process, the cylinder head is able to withstand loads of more than 180 bar.

The envisaged order volume is to supply a maximum of 110,000 engines per year. To further speed up production efficiency, the Linz site has undergone a EUR 20 million refurbishment. The cylinder heads are shipped to Ford's engine manufacturing plant in Dagenham in the UK.

This will be the first time Hydro exhibits at Eurogress. "As a leading development partner and supplier of high-performing engine castings, we feel Aachen is an appropriate place to exhibit our latest technologies and products," says Herbert Smetan, head of the Hydro Aluminium Castings business unit.
