Siemens Signs Contract with Tianjin Metallurgy Group to Produce High-Speed Rod Outlet

Siemens VAI has signed a contract with Tianjin Metallurgy Group Zhasan Youfa Iron & Steel Co. Ltd. in Tianjin, China to produce a rod outlet for a new rod mill, which will enable the company to produce high-end rod products with thermomechanical rolling.

The new rod outlet features advanced high-speed technology. This is the third mill that Siemens will build for the Tianjin Metallurgy Group. Commissioning is scheduled for year-end 2011.

The scope of supply is for engineering of all rod outlet equipment starting with the second pre-finishing mill to the reform station, and includes supply for critical units of equipment: a two-stand 230 Vee prefinishing mill, a shear and switch, an eight-stand Morgan No-Twist Mill, a four-stand patented Morgan Reducing/Sizing Mill, and pinch roll and laying head. The contract includes six proprietary mechatronic packages to control key rod outlet equipment operation. Depending on product mix, the new mill should produce approximately 700,000 tpy with guaranteed speeds of 112 meters per second.

Tianjin Metallurgy Group merged with three other steel companies in the city of Tianjin on July 13 to form Bohai Steel Group. The newly merged companies collectively had about 20 million tons of crude steel output last year, which ranks it seventh among China’s largest steelmakers.
