PepsiCo Develops Bio-Based Green PET Bottle

PepsiCo declared that it has formulated the first Green PET plastic bottle by utilizing plant based and fully recyclable resources.

The new product development will allow the company to produce beverage containers with minimum carbon footprint.

The Green PET bottle is made of 100% reusable, bio-based raw products such as pine bark, switch grass and corn husks. The company has planned to diversify and use other renewable resources such as oat hulls, potato peels, orange peels and other agricultural spin-offs from its food business.

The company utilized both chemical and biological processes and discovered techniques to introduce a molecular structure that is exactly like a petroleum-based PET bottle. The Green PET bottle has the same feel and look as the currently utilized PET bottles.

The pilot production of the green PET bottle is planned in 2012, and after productive completion the company will proceed for full-scale commercial production.
