US Marine’s V-22 Osprey Aircraft Uses Latrobe’s Triple-Melted Alloys

Latrobe Specialty Steel’s triple-melted alloys were utilized in the US Marine’s V-22 Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft to rescue the ejected US pilot from the Libyan Desert.

Latrobe premium alloys are utilized in the vital parts of specially designed V-22 Osprey tilt-rotor mechanism such as the engines, rotor shafts and transmission gearboxes. The company produces premium alloys at its major plant in Latrobe, Pennsylvania and at its sister plants in Wauseon, Ohio and Sandycreek, Venango County in Pennsylvania. The materials are then supplied to various vendors working for the Osprey production. At every production phase, the workers test the performance of Latrobe’s alloys for compliance with different standards of the aerospace industry.

The Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Latrobe Specialty Steel, Mark T. Weberding, stated that the highly homogeneous Latrobe materials are produced by vacuum and triple melting processes. These materials tolerate the challenging needs of the multifaceted V-22 Osprey aircraft, produced by The Boeing and Bell Helicopter Textron.
