Suzano Pulp and Paper, with the help of Nalco, a provider of sustainability services, has considerably decreased the usage of chemicals and water in its papermaking process at its industrial facilities based in Mucuri, Bahia and Suzano, Sao Paulo in Brazil.
Suzano is a major player in the Brazilian paper industry and holds second position in the worldwide production of eucalyptus pulp. The company designed a new set of key performance indicators for its papermaking process and requested Nalco to identify solutions to maximize the utilization of natural resources, decrease expenditures and enhance the performance of the process.
Suzano implemented Nalco’s patented PARETO Mixing Technology and a new retention, drainage and formation program to improve the wet-end of the papermaking procedure where huge quantities of fiber and water are converted into paper sheets before they are dried. The utilization of the PARETO Optimizer solution enhanced the mixing process, resulting in reduced usage of chemicals and water.
The deployed technologies reduced over 79 million gallons of total fresh water in both mills of Suzano, resulting in considerable enhancement in the sustainability performance.
According to Ernesto Pousada, Suzano Pulp and Paper’s Executive Director of Operations, the company is always willing to deploy efficient solutions and strives to improve its business competitiveness.
