Outotec has been awarded a contract worth approximately € 30 million to design and deliver a gas cleaning and sulfuric acid facility to Almalyk Mining & Metallurgical Company (AMMC), a primary copper producer in Uzbekistan.
The new sulfuric acid plant will aid AMMC’s existing copper production facilities and will produce about 500,000 t of sulfuric acid per year. The entire project is anticipated to be completed in 2013.
Outotec’s scope of delivery includes supply of proprietary equipment such as acid resistant parts that are produced using Edmeston SX stainless steel material, procurement, detail engineering and process technology design. Also, the company will offer advisory services to build and commission the overall project.
AMMC mainly focuses on improving the region’s environmental settings, where the copper plants are located. The gas cleaning unit will treat and clean the off-gases of the copper facilities and later they will be processed in the sulfuric acid plant.
The company’s testimony as one of the leading providers of sulfuric acid technology and its expertise in the metallurgical and mineral processing facilities helped Outotec to be successful in winning the current project. This is Outotec’s first sulfuric acid project in the CIS region in several years.
