At the AUSA 2011 exhibition, GKN Aerospace Transparency Systems will showcase the SPD-Smart armored window. The window has been developed along with the support from the United States Department of Defense Combating Terrorism Technical Support Office – Technical Support Working Group (CTTSO-TSWG).
Tests have proved that the SPD-Smart window is durable to armored passenger vehicle lifecycle factors. In addition, the joint development program includes durability tests associated with vibration, humidity and temperature and performance tests related to ballistic protection and security.
The joint program signifies application of GKN’s expertise for developing transparent armor solutions. It also shows how the company’s product capabilities integrated with SPD-Smart technology, improves the security and safety of the military personnel in warfare.
When compared to conventional armored glass systems, SPD-Smart products, including windows, partitions, doors, sunroofs, skylights and others deliver improved safety benefits. SPD-Smart products are blast-resistant and bullet-resistant and hence, they offer great levels of protection to buildings and vehicles. Other characteristic of the products include, highly light-transmissive clear forms, fast switching speed and extremely dark tints. SPD-Smart products provide excellent control over solar energy and also protect interiors and add to user comfort. These products are available in both lightweight polycarbonate and glass substrates and are offered in custom sizes and forms for use in new construction, retrofit projects and original equipment. They are controlled either manually or automatically.
