Boart Longyear’s industry-standard button bit range has always delivered tough, all-round performance across the spectrum of drilling applications. Now - incorporating its newly-developed ultrastrong T6 hardmaterial - the rugged bits are engineered to take drilling to the next level.
Leading the pack is Boart Longyear’s new R32 long-life bit which features a stronger body design that substantially extends drilling life with significant reductions in ‘ring off’.
Both the T6 and R32 innovations emanate from the global group’s culture of continuous improvement and both have already yielded impressive performance benefits in applications around the world.
The new R32 body design incorporates: a larger head diameter; increased wall thickness near the head; an elongated neck; and an improved internal undercut. Net benefits include reduced wear, more efficient stress distribution throughout the bit, and a greater flushing area. In mining applications, all these improvements provide greater protection against bit failure due to “ring off” but they are proving especially beneficial in long-life applications where tungsten carbide often outlasts the bit’s steel body.
The T6 hardmaterial was developed by re-engineering Boart Longyear’s tungsten carbide milling process and optimising its sintering process. The result is a dynamic structural matrix that provides a nearly flawless uniformity of particle size and delivers a 27% improvement in transverse rupture strength. Bits manufactured with the new T6 perform exceptionally well in all drilling environments – with drillers reporting significantly increased wear life and, in even the harshest drilling conditions, virtually no button failure.
