DSM and EBRABIOTECH to Introduce New Series of Bio-Based Materials

Royal DSM is an international Life and Material Sciences company. Its U.S-based Business Unit, DSM Functional Materials, has entered into partnership with Empresa Brasileira de Biotechnologia (Ebrabiotech) of Brazil, in order to launch a new array of bio-based materials, branded by DSM.

The concrete floor coatings market utilizes these materials. Its objective is to develop bio-based castor oil materials, which are non-edible and capable of reducing the total carbon footprint.

The DSM Functional Materials were established on DSM's four global growth criteria including Sustainability, Innovation, High-Growth Economies, and Acquisitions and Partnerships. It is intending to gain market acceptance by fabricating its materials to be lightweight and also eco-friendly. The UVolve Instant Floor Coatings, based on UV-curable technology, were introduced in 2009.

According to the Business Unit Director DSM Functional Materials, Henk-Jan Koenen, this new development that has been achieved through DSM and Ebrabiotech is ideal for the production of new green chemistry approaches that deliver sustainable solutions for worldwide marketers. The development of ECO+ products will contribute to the company’s, capturing more than 80% of its innovation channel by 2015. This novel product line, as a whole, offers environmental benefits that challenge the mainstream solutions.

The industrial concrete flooring market will be benefitted, following the launch of the new line of bio-based materials produced by DSM and Ebrabiotech. Nevertheless, the two companies together anticipate developing sustainable novel low-carbon footprint solutions for structural steel protection applications and aquaculture.
