Southmedic Uses DuPont Delrin Acetal Resin in Safety Scalpel System

Southmedic has introduced an innovative safety scalpel system for surgeons. Cutting Above & Beyond Objections (CABO) safety scalpel’s main part is the black safety scalpel holder, which is made from DuPont Delrin SC acetal resin.

The CABO Scalpel demonstrates the system covering the blade

This new DuPont material has been developed specially for the components needed for high-precision molding in the healthcare business and offers low friction, high stiffness and compliance with ISO 10993 -5 and -11, and USP Class VI regulations.

The safety cartridge of the CABO system fits all scalpel handles. Its entirely retractable sheath has allowed for the observation of scalpel blade and gives an optimum feel weight and function to the surgeons. Delrin-based component has accommodated the scalpel system’s main parts that include the blade, handle and sheath.

Delrin SC acetal was chosen by Southmedic for the enhanced stiffness, when compared to other competitive thermoplastics. The unreinforced material provides metal-like properties and also offers a soft surface for the usage of heavy-contact by surgeons.

A snap-fit design is integrated in the injection-molded blade holder. A metal blade and a clear retractable polycarbonate (PC) sheath can be fixed to the holder. The low-friction properties of the material have ensured the easy going of PC sheath slides along the grooved track of the substrate.

Delrin acetal maintains excellent property towards the ethylene oxide sterilization process that is utilized in this application. The Delrin-made handle connector and blade measures around 3/8” thickness and 2¾” length and are also available in two different sizes in order to hold several blades and handles used in surgical methods.
