Steel Dynamics, a steel producers and metal recycling company in the U.S., has received approval from its board of directors to expand its steel mill in Pittsboro, Indiana. The expansion of Engineered Bar Products Division will boost the mill's production capacity as well as enhance the product offerings of superior small-diameter special-bar-quality (SBQ) steel bars.
It is anticipated that the expansion will increase the annual production capacity to 950,000 t, which is 52% increase from the current capacity of 625,000 t. The expansion project is expected to cost nearly $76 million.
The project includes several upgrades to the rolling mill to produce precision sized SBQ bars and enhancements in material handling and production. In addition, Steel Dynamics will extend the Engineered Bar Products Division’s bar finishing facilities to perform non-destructive testing of finished steel bars.
The expanded Indiana-based mill will focus on production of small-diameter, high-quality SBQ bars and sizes ranging from 1” to 3”. These steel bars have a wide range of applications in automotive, energy, industrial and transportation sectors. The additional capacity will make the Engineered Bar Products Division as one among the largest SBQ manufacturing facilities in North America. The steel mill expansion project is expected to be completed in the latter half of 2013.
